What Games Should Focus On Instead of Motion Controls
A lot of time and money is being dumped into motion controls these days by the big three console companies. I wouldn’t call motion the death to the joystick like some of my industry compadres, and I think certain aspects of motion controls have merit. It’s just disappointing when you think of all the other things game companies could be putting their research and development into. In the massive push to change the modern controller, there is so much else developers could be fixing that actually, you know, need fixing.
Fixing the animations of game characters
I can create real-time interdimensional portals on my Xbox, but for some reason, walking is a baffling concept in video games. In games you run all the time everywhere, because apparently it’s the easiest method of travel and walking is boring as shit. Move the analog stick to run automatically in most games and if you want to walk just treat it like you’re diffusing a bomb.
There’s also the games where you walk by default and have to tap or press a button to run. It’s more realistic and that’s cool; it’s just too bad that strolling is so unbearably slow that most gamers would prefer staying in a triathlon style sprint.
Frank West has more zombie swagger than any of the enemies in Dead Rising because he walks like he’s late for kidney stone surgery. Work needs to be done on the animation and pacing of walking so that running really is the secondary option in titles shooting for realism. Games have complex ragdoll physics and engines completely dedicated to blood spatter. The way we move in a game world is something we should have nailed a generation ago.
Gettin rid of all the damn lag ( Hey-oh!)
How about we dedicate servers before we dedicate resources to motion controls? With online multiplayer as big as it is on consoles, it should be at the forefront of innovation. Instead it literally lags behind PC gaming, which has had over a decade headstart of mostly headache-free networking.
What’s especially frustrating about it all is how top notch the services on consoles are. Xbox Live and Playstation Network are both high quality despite the fact that the actual game connections could be improved. Both consoles have a few games that use dedicated servers, with Sony doing substantially better than Microsoft, but Peer 2 Peer gaming still rules.
The inherent problem is money: dedicated servers are expensive when you could just let players connect to each other directly. Because of this it’s really only an option for your mega-publishers like EA, and when given the choice most would rather stick to the bottom line and save the cash. But I am not buying the “too expensive” excuse when PSN has more than XBL and it wasn’t the service that reportedly made $1.2 billion last year. It’s a proven way to minimize connection issues but it’s not universal because it would cut into profits. There’s not enough demand from the average gamer who doesn’t know any better, unlike those motion controls. That’s what the kids are into these days, right?
Make Artificial Intelligence actually intelligent
It would be nice to think that Microsoft, Sony, and Nintendo all have these braintrusts working on the next big step in Artificial Intelligence. The reality is Microsoft’s been busy trying to one-up the Eyetoy, Sony’s trying to copy Nintendo, and Nintendo’s creating peripherals that read your heartbeat when you stick your finger in them. I cut them some slack though. The 3DS was a tremendous breath of fresh air at E3 when I saw Sony and Microsoft basically standing around and twiddling their thumbs.
The lack of progress when it comes to how NPCs behave and problem-solve lately is pathetic. The only person trying to make any real leap in artificial intelligence is gaming’s favorite hypeman, Peter Molyneux. His new Milo project is the first “woah” moment in A.I since Black & White, also his project, which got the Guinness World Record for Artificial Intelligence. Black & White came out almost 10 years ago. It didn’t even deliver everything it promised. It should have easily been surpassed by now, but the extent of most advanced A.I. in games is a character knowing when to heal it self and find cover from bullets aimed at it’s face. The very same companies leading the way in motion controls could be giving developers resources for artificial intelligence worthy of the technology.
This is just a few things, but I would take advances in any of them over this big motion control hooplah. In the end, the powers that be are businesses though; they only supply if we demand. As the medium improves we have to raise the bar on our expectations and support the games that try to meet them. Otherwise we’ll always be stuck playing second fiddle to the hip new fad.
