Things You May Have Missed in Skyrim

By Nick Simberg

Skyrim is a big game. Every after getting every achievement and doing every single one of the infinite number of procedurally generated quests, you probably haven’t seen everything the game has to offer. Good thing the internet is here, eh? Now you can have even more fun with Skyrim with this handy dandy… guide? List? Not quite sure what you’d call it. Here it goes, anyway.

The Drinking Contest

In Whiterun, there is a bar called the Bannered Mare. Once you reach level 14 (but not too high of a level, I discovered to my chagrin), a man will challenge you to a drinking contest. You kill dragons – why would you fear a little mead? You accept, with the promise of a special staff if you win.

The next thing you know, you wake up the next morning with a serious hangover. Apparently in your drunken stupor, you trashed a church, did something unsavory involving a giant and a goat, and who knows what other shenanigans… It’s all very reminiscent of Dude, Where’s My Car? It’s also a rare moment of humor in a generally heavy-handed game, and one of Skyrim’s best quests.

If you leveled too high to do the quest, or just can’t wait to see the hijinks that ensue in “A Night to Remember,” you can watch a spoilerific walkthrough (completely with some of the most boring commentary I’ve ever had the privilege of being exposed to) here.

The foxes bit was completely unknown to me.

It’s not just in the Bannered Mare. You might have missed him because he spawned in another Tavern. When I first encountered him, it was at the Tavern in Iverstead.

Good point! He’s usually in the Bannered Mare though, and he won’t appear anywhere once you become too high of a level. There’s apparently a lot of Daedric quests with similar restrictions, too.

I found him in Markarth I think he spawns around randomly

I found him in the Bee and Barb in Riften, level 68, I believe, when I started it.

    • Poop

    • Soyeah

Awhile after doing the ‘Drinking Game’ quest, a khajit came up to me on the road claiming that I owed him money because I gothim to take me to a temple while on my drunken rampage :P

There will also be a guy who says you bet him he couldn’t steal a hat, and demands you pay what you owe him for it.

About the drinking game quest: It’s OBVIOUSLY a reference to The Hangover, not Dude, Where’s My Car? LOL Also, there is not a point when he will not spawn. He spawns only after you become level 14, but you won’t “miss” it by becoming too high of level.
