The Uncertain Future of Gaming
I have loved video games all my life. So much that it has pushed me towards my college major in 3D Animation. I’ve always wanted to work on and make video games, but as of late, I just don’t know if it will be the world I want to be a part of anymore. The video game industry is getting pretty crazy right now what with all its newfangled motion controls and lack of controllers at all. It makes me wonder what the hell is going to happen with the future of games in general. One would think that predicting the future of games even now would be clear and concise, but for me, it isn’t. I just don’t know what the crap to think anymore about where video games are going and if they’ll even be an improvement.
I remember when all anyone expected from the future of video games was improved graphics. Just waiting for the day when games could look as amazing as a Final Fantasy cutscene, but playable. While many games today are really good-looking, we’re still not there yet. But now, this is the least of my concerns. The fluidity and graphics are passé. The thing to really wonder about is where games in general will go.
The Wii has been on top of the world for quite a while now. While many would argue it isn’t in terms of what kinds of games it puts out, the fact of the matter is that Nintendo has been making ridiculous amounts of money off of the casual market. It’s only natural that Sony and Microsoft would get in on that game; hence the upcoming releases of Sony’s Move and Microsoft’s Kinect.
Now granted, most of the gaming world sees these devices as completely retarded and useless, but that’s also what many saw the Wii as (or at least many people that I know) and look how that’s turning out. Microsoft and Sony are most likely going to make a ton of money and lasso in the Wii crowd regardless of how useful the devices actually are.
Of course, one could argue that Microsoft and Sony won’t go Nintendo’s route and hinder their games by making their fancy new gameplay controls the only way to play, but this is only the beginning. The corporate minds could easily change and force others to use their new control schemes just like Nintendo has been if it means more money from the general public.
This brings us back to my puzzling thoughts about the future of gaming. Will these devices be there? If they are, are they going to overrun the market and make games simpler? Maybe they’ll be well-integrated into titles. The latter seems pretty unlikely, though since the extent of integration with most titles has been either tilting for balance or shaking wildly to perform an action that could have just as easily been mapped to a button.
As for the former, you could argue that this whole fad of motion controls will simply die out or become lessened by the next generation, but that also seems less likely as it would mean games would be once again stuck in that rut of not offering anything new in terms of how we play—if you think that’s a bad thing, that is. Being stuck in a rut with the previous generation led to some pretty sweet games. Creativity is still strong without this new method of game control, which has only been hindering games rather than helping them (though the new Zelda game may prove otherwise).
Once again, however, the focus will fall on money. Will the big companies let the tantalizing scent of money cloud their better judgment and force upon us a motion-controlled video game tribulation next generation? Will the only outlet for good games be through the PC or indie developers? Will the future of video games be jumping around waving your arms in front of your fancy 3D HDTV?
