The Future of Gaming? Poster Board Projectors

Ignoring the title and the cheap setup, UT’s very own have come up with an interesting solution to head tracking in FPS games, a swiveling projector. As seen in the video above this eliminates the early problems of head tracking in FPS games, where looking to the side has your character look to the side, yet you won’t be able to see it because TVs don’t completely surround you. This moving projector could help solve this problem, taking one more step to making games a tad bit more realistic.

Now I applaud the students for their effort, and they are obviously very talented. I just don’t see this tech really panning out. In order to take advantage of this you will need a dome of sorts, the students represent this with their bent poster boards, giving the projector a canvas to display its images on. Now in order for this to go mass market people will either have to buy some sort of new tech where they will buy a type of 180 degree display screen, or bending poster boards will be our children’s favorite past time in the living room. I don’t see either happening, interesting stuff though.
