Blockbuster adds games to mail rental service
Blockbuster has just officially added games to it’s mail rental service, beginning at $8.95 for one disc. The games have been on a trial run in test markets across the country for awhile but now make their debut to the rest of us commonfolk starting with 3,000 titles.
The addition of games is meant to give Blockbuster’s service a 1UP (oh ho ho) over competitiors GameFly and Netflix, which are either games or movies-only and priced similar. Blockbuster’s also had problems shaking off competitors RedBox, with their machines offering DVD rentals at $1. It’s all caused the brick-and-mortar stores to suffer and Blockbuster to consider declaring bankruptcy earlier in the year. Desperate times call for desperate measures, and maybe the consumer option to have games or movies interchangeably will be exactly the edge the former rental giant is dying for.
Netflix on PS3 will be discless by October
Great news for PS3 owning Netflix fans! Â Discussing their last financial quarter, CEO Reed Hasting revealed that they plan to redesign the PS3 Netflix application, removing the need for a start-up disc. Â Hasting said that the update will be in place “by October.” Â The decision is most likely a response to both the long-standing complaints from PS3 users, who begrudging acknowledge the Xbox 360 as the superior Netflix-viewing platform, and the recent critical response to the Hulu Plus PS3 interface, which has been very positive.
