Square Enix: Limited Play Time In Final Fantasy XIV Online
Hold on to your socks folks, this might just be the dumbest I’ve heard in a long time. Sankaku Complex (WARNING: this website is NSFW) has reported that Square Enix will be implementing a ”fatigue system” in Final Fantasy XIV which will limit all players to how long they can play the game.
Details are still sketchy, but here’s what we know so far: If you play the game with a single charcater for more than one hour in a day, your character will begin to experience negative status effects, weakening them over time. Even worse, if you play for more than four hours your XP will go completely down to zero. Oh, and when you do end up going over the one hour mark, don’t think you’ll be able to just start playing again the next day. You’ll have to wait two days before your character can fully recover. They call this waiting period “dormancy.”

So why is Square Enix putting instituting such a harsh curfew? They say it’s to help attarct more casual plyers who may not have the time to commit to an MMO, but I imgine that they will probably be annoyed at this too. I think Square Enix is shooting itself in the foot here. Making players pay for a game they only have one hour to play sounds like a ripoff. Of course I could always be wrong, and maybe this will turn out alright, but I doubt it.
Here’s is the meat and potatoes of the interview.
“We wanted to introduce a system to reward players who don’t have a lot of time to play. Maybe it looks as though we are placing long playing users at a disadvantage, but the idea is really to let play for short periods be viable.”
Won’t that cause some concern amongst players who play for longer?
“We want these players to try different classes. If you change class the fatigue doesn’t affect you, so you could try non-combat classes as well. You actually have more play choices now as you can make more characters.”
Fatigue goes up to about 50% in 2 hours, and it takes 2 days to go down! So, if you play 4 hours you have to stop playing completely for 2 days!
More on the “dormancy” system:
Recovery takes time.
2 hours of combat or 1 hour of craft will induce “dormancy.”
The dormancy is actually shared over different characters.
It will decrease gains to 0% in the end.
It seems to be proportional to the amount of XP you earn.Both light and heavy player are going to weep...
So for those of you planning on buying FFIVX, make sure you have an alarm clock.
