Everything You Need to Know About Playstation Move
According to Sony, Playstation Move will become the superior motion control platform for one reason: diversity. Unlike Kinect or the Wii, which Sony says are looking to grab a new type of gamer who was never interested in video games before, Sony has pledged that they will make “Move” games that appeal to not only new casual gamers, but also traditional gamers. How will they do that? Well, they started by noting that many of PS3′s upcoming AAA software will support Move, including Killzone 3, Socom 4, and Ghost Recon: Future Soldier. None of them were playable on the floor however with Move.
From a technical standpoint, Sony sees diversity as the balance between many different kinds of control. Even though Move is a controller you hold in your hands, it registers full body movement, based on the controllers position in relation to you and the console (similar to Kinect in many ways). Also, showing that the similarities between Move and the Wii are only skin-deep, Sony emphasized the use of one-to-one movement – to crouch, you must bend your knees, not just lower the controller, and so on.
In other words, how you use move will be closer to what you do while using Kinect, rather than the wrist-flicks and twist motions commonly used when playing Wii games. Sure, you’ll need a controller, unlike Kinect, but quality is better than style (plus having an analogue stick just works better in the first place). At the same time, Sony also emphasized the use of buttons, noting that many types of games need that kind of interaction in addition to full-body motion.
You actually won’t need to wait very long: Playstation Move will be available in America on September 17th, in Europe on the 19th and in Japan on the 21st. As for the cost, the controllers, assuming you already own the Playstation Eye, will cost 50$ apiece for the primary controller, and 30$ for the “Navigation Controller” (Like the Wii Nunchuck).
If you don’t have a PS Eye, there is a Controller/Eye Bundle, with a bonus game, Move Champions, for 99$. Lastly, A Move-ready PS3 Console will set you back $399. Last but not least, 15 new games will drop alongside the Move on launch day, with that library growing to forty games by the end of 2010. Here’s a list of some of the games revealed to be Move friendly today (not all are launch titles though):
