Nintendo: 3DS launching by the end of March 2011, design not final

If you thought the 3DS build revealed at E3 looked a little too beta for reveal, well here’s some reassuring news for you: Nintendo agrees. Nintendo has just revealed that the 3DS’ design is not final, and that we should see a final build of the system revealed soon. When I saw the system, the battery appeared to be clunked on, and the edges didn’t feel all that polished. Here’s a direct quote from Reggie Fils Aime:

“You know typically, at an E3, our engineers are looking for feedback. You know, we have an army of Nintendo representatives out on our show floor talking to attendees, getting reactions to everything in the device: the depth slider, the buttons, the sliding pad that is, essentially, an analog-type stick. These are things that we’re looking to get reaction to, including the overall button placement. When we get all that feedback, then we’ll finalize the design,” he was quoted as saying to the Industry Gamers.

But the biggest news Reggie revealed was the 3DS’ expected launch: “…we will launch in all of our major markets by March 31, 2011.”. With not that many games being officially revealed outside of logo appearances (and hardly any games being playable at E3), Nintendo has some major work cut ahead for them.

So now, all eyes will be on the 3DS as it prepares for what is shaping up to be biggest handheld launch of all time. March 2011 can’t come soon enough. Below is the E3 build of the DS.
