Ubisoft swears they aren’t taking advantage of Michael Jackson’s death
I think it’s fair to say that many assumed the Ubisoft’s announcement that they would developing a Michael Jackson-themed dancing game at E3 was simply a way of exploiting the deceased singer’s popularity. Jackson’s music has seen a surge in popularity since his death just over a year ago. As you might expect, such a negative stigma could not only undo the name recognition that MJ provides, but actually have a negative impact on sales.
With that in mind, Ubisoft UK marketing director Murray Pannel made sure to address the issue in a recent interview with Gameindustry.biz, pointing out that the company had begun working with the king of pop months before his death in 2009. Pannel said that Jackson had been “pro-actively” searching for a producer to “bring value” to his triumphant return to video games. ”So this isn’t something that’s been jumped on since his death – we’ve been working on this, despite the fact that we announced it quite recently, for a long time,” Pannel said, rather bluntly.
Since rumors of an MJ game began when a source from Michael Jackson’s company MJ productions revealed that a Michael Jackson video game project was in the works shortly after the singer’s death, you can’t blame anyone who saw Ubisoft’s announcement as trying to cash in.
Michael Jackson: The experience, a motion-control based game that will combine singing and dancing, will be available for PS3, Xbox 360 and Wii. There will also be PSP and DS versions as well. The game is currently on track to be released shortly after the Kinect launch in November.
