New iPhone Revealed at WWDC

By Steve Bogda
-June 7, 2010

As widely speculated, the new iPhone was announced at WWDC today. Even though we’ve seen it before (thank you, alcohol), today we finally got to see the thing in Steve Jobs’ palm. Expect to see Apple fanboys cry in delight, techies to rage, and for everyone to pre-order the damn thing within the next couple of days. The device comes packed with a new operating system called iOS4 coming with multitaking (thank God). Will cost $199 for the 16GB and 299$ for the 32GB. Hit the jump for full information on the device (and damn, there is a LOT) including its gaming capabilities.

After hyping up how much better the iPhone’s market share is better than Android (28% to 9%), Steve went on to reveal the iPhone:

The new iPhone is 9.33mm, making it the smallest smartphone in the world (24% thinner than the current iPhone). As seen in the Gizmodo leak, volume buttons going down the side and a LED flash camera on the front are rocking the device’s exterior. The new iPhone takes adavantage of a stainless steel back , and uses glass to prevent scratching. Oh, and it’s very pirty.

One of the biggest gripes with the Gizmodo leak was how industrial the new iPhone looked; it did not look like an Apple product. Steve acknowledged this. The lines and dashes seen are part of the primary structure of the phone, like Bluetooth, GPS and Wi-Fi. A big feature also revealed was Retina Display, which allows the screen to possess 4x as many pixels as the old iPhone screen. The screen really is a beaut: 3.5 inches, 326 pixels perinch, and takes advantage of IPS technology for “superb color.”

The phone’s battery has been made to last longer: 300 hours of standby, 7 hours of 3G talk, 4o hours of music, 10 hours of video, 1o hours of Wi-Fi browsing, and a nice 6 hours of 3G surfing. Not too bad all around. The iPhone also uses a brand new chip which the Apple brain-trust has made: the A4.

Now here’s the great part for us gamers (I know, FINALLY): the device holds a 3-axis gyro which makes the SIXAXIS appear to be designed by a team of blind baboons. Jobs demoed the hardware with a game of Jenga.  Jobs also went on to showcase the device’s new camera, which features a 5 megapixel camera with an illuminated sensor. But past 5 megapixels, the camera comes with flash, and that is huge. Example photo below:

But the video is even more stunning: HD at 720p running at 30 FPS. Woah. Oh, and it comes with a $4.99 iMovie app, designed to edit videos on the fly (albeit a very slimmed down version).

The device’s new operating system, iOS4, is able to take on multitasking while keeping the battery sustainable, which will hopefully be fantastic. Jobs tested the system by playing music and simultaneously browsing the web. There is a multitasking bar that is accessible by swiping the screen, and the system operates on folders. The crowd exploded as if Jessica Alba exposed herself to them.

iBooks for the iPhone and Touch were also revealed. Oh, and video calling is enabled. Awesome.

To open the show, Senor Jobs began talking about how “magical” the iPad is (including beefing up the game’s gaming capabilities, which look very impressive) by showcasing its worldwide coverage and appeal. Steve went on to first reveal Netflix for the iPhone, an app that should get any multimedia fan excited. Following that, Mark Pincus from Zynga came out to reveal Farmville for iPhone, which caused the crowd to both laugh and stick forks into their eyes in disgust.  Activision made an appearance revealing a new Guitar Hero for the iPad and iPhone (available today), which would be cool if the Guitar Hero franchise wasn’t milked to death three years ago.

I like the sound of recording videos in 720p, that’ll be great for my random YouTube/Facebook rubbish. I have an iPhone 3GS at the moment, will stick with that until the 4G’s available I guess.
