Gamestop eats Kongregate

Gamestop announced today that they have purchased online game developer Kongregate, and will likely use the company to grow the company’s marketshare in the digital world. The purchase comes just a week after Gamestop CEO Paul Raines said he hopes to transform his company into a digital “gaming platform,” expanding into online gaming and other markets. While Gamestop is the undisputed king of the gaming retail world, their online presence is limited. Raines said of the merger; ”Kongregate advances GameStop’s digital strategy by providing a gaming platform for casual, mobile and browser games that can be promoted and played by our existing gamers.”
For now, Kongregate founders Jim and Emily Greer will continue to run the company’s SF-based office. That said, based on Gamestop’s intentions it seems likely that the company will be fully absorbed some time in the near future.
