With Kinect, Your House Might Learn How to Kill You
According to Microsoft VP Marc Whitten, Kinect (Formerly Project Natal) will make the Xbox simpler and the living room smarter.
DOES THAT FREAK ANYBODY ELSE OUT!? I really don’t want my living room doing the ‘Times Crossword puzzle faster than me…
(I can’t finish it, anyways. So it’s not THAT impressive)
At long last, we’re finally getting a little taste of what that looks like. Microsoft demoed that basic functions of Kinect – How you access menus, etc. Using a combination of voice control and movement, Kinect allows users to navigate through menus and interact with non-gaming functions like watching movies and playing music in a very easy and intuitive way.
First off, Kinect can recognize you. That’s right. It knows who you are, what you like to use it for, what you ate for dinner and that you have a foot fetish… (Ok two of those are true – You can pick, which ones.) To sign into on your Xbox when you have Kinect, all you have to do is wave… WAVE. When Xbox recognizes you, it takes you to a screen called the “Kinect hub” – a controller-less pointing-based version of the Xbox Dashboard, comprised of your top 8 Xbox activities.
Like that.
Ok, so now you’ve chosen to do something – let’s say you wanna watch a movie (The Microsoft guy wanted to watch “Alice in Wonderland”, I’d recommend something less terrible) you can pause, fast forward, rewind, etc using simple hand command or by saying: “XBOX – Blah Blah.” Those commands include going back to the Kinect Hub.
Bottom Line – Kinect works. Like, it really works. I’m pretty freaked out.
