Arcades: not dead yet

Arcades are dead.
That’s what people have been saying for years now, but I don’t believe it. I’ve been frequenting Chinatown Fair for years; I’ve been to various malls here and there all with their own cabinets. Heck, I even went to Barcade this weekend and found it jam-packed with people eager to play Smash TV, 1943, and Frogger to name a few. Yes, that’s right: people are still willing to play Paperboy in 2010.
Why do people insist that the arcade scene is dying? Sure, the number of new cabinets has dropped dramatically in the last decade. Sure, tons of gamers are sitting at home playing their favorite titles over Xbox Live and PSN (and I guess Brawl as well.) But the arcades are still thriving, pulling in quarter after quarter despite all of that. The fighting game community in particular is always anxious for a new cabinet, even if they already own the game. Nothing online will ever beat the experience gained from playing a stranger side by side in a fighter. Nothing. Rhythm games like DDR are still going strong, not to mention the classic shooters like House of the Dead and Time Crisis.
Point is, arcades are not a concept of the past. They’re still here, they’re still great, and if you’re a gamer you owe it to yourself to visit the nearest one and see what they’re all about.
